Diving Gear – Think Before You Act

When addressing dive safety, most articles you find online stress the importance of safety checks, the proper way to maintain diving gear and other closely related subjects. I would be the first to agree all of these are very important. In fact, there isn’t anything relating to dive safety which should be considered unimportant. There is, however, a subject I feel we hear too little about. What I am referring to is the wisdom, or should I say the lack of wisdom, used to dive alone. I know there are divers who have completed hundreds of dives safely and feel going below alone, just one time, is not a big deal. However, all it takes is one time.

Regardless of how thoroughly you check your diving gear, equipment malfunction can happen. Accidents can still take place in spite of how well-prepared we are. If you take the time to really consider the wisdom of diving alone, look at the subject objectively, hopefully you will decide it is a bad idea. I am sure there have been times when you were diving with friends and something totally unexpected happened. This can easily happen when you are alone, with nobody around to assist.
